This year, artists just couldn’t help themselves from turning out the tunes – from monolithic masterpieces like Shit Talk by Sufjan Stevens (with a runtime of eight-and-a-half-minutes) to bite-sized bangers like Mitski’s My Love Mine All Mine (which is only about 140 beautiful seconds).

Pop songwriters were flexing their shiny pink muscles; we already know how much you love Padam Padam, and love it or hate it, the Barbie movie did give us Dua Lipa’s Dance the Night. Local legends like Hudson Mohawke and Young Fathers were hard at work, and now and then there were even a few surprise returns – namely, The Beatles getting their first UK number one in over 50 years.

We asked each of our music writers for their top three picks from the last 12 months, and put all their suggestions in our definitive 2023 mixtape. If you haven’t already checked out our albums of 2023, do that now – each record makes at least one appearance on the playlist, but if you want to get into the nitty gritty of our music committee, carve out approximately six hours, sit back, and enjoy the best tunes that this year had to offer.
