We Are Scientists announce, erm, '50th anniversary' tour
Cult indie duo We Are Scientists will commemorate the 50th anniversary of their beloved debut album, With Love & Squalor, with a vinyl release and tour, including a stop in Glasgow. Is it the album's 50th anniversary? No, but why should that matter?
It seems like only yesterday that New York rockers We Are Scientists released their brilliant debut With Love & Squalor. Although according to the band's latest press release it was quite some time ago. Fifty years ago, in fact, circa the time The Beatles released Abbey Road, The Stones put out Let it Bleed and The Velvet Underground released their self-titled third studio album. It was the year Neil Armstrong walked on the moon... wait a second.
“A long time ago our management came to us and suggested we do some With Love & Squalor shows on the 14th anniversary of its release, which we thought was pretty dumb," explains the band's Keith Murray. "‘Come back to us on a real anniversary,’ we told them. Fast-forward to a couple of weeks ago, when they told us the big 50 was coming up. I’d say that’s worth celebrating.”
Time is relative, we suppose, so let's roll with it. This 50th [sic] anniversary celebration will include a vinyl rerelease of their beloved debut album which gave birth to blistering tracks like Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt, The Great Escape, It’s A Hit and fan favourite Textbook.
"Fans have been asking us to reissue With Love & Squalor on vinyl ever since the last printing, in 2006, ran out. The fact that it took fifty fucking years to make this happen still blows my mind,” says We Are Scientists' Chris Cain. Murray adds: "It’s a testament to the glacial pace of things at major labels. Definitely helps explain some of their financial trouble."
The 'landmark' year also includes a mini-tour, which includes dates in Germany, the Netherlands, England and a Scottish stop at Glasgow's Òran Mór on 5 December.
