The Twilight Sad release new music and announce a full autumn tour including a date at Edinburgh's The Liquid Room

You'd be mistaken for thinking The Twilight Sad haven't really done anything since releasing their 2014 album Nobody Wants to Be Here and Nobody Wants to Leave, but in fact it's quite the contrary. Having found a new superfan in the form of The Cure's Robert Smith, the Glasgow-based band went on to join Smith and co on The Cure's 2016 world tour.

Having not played a show for 18 months until their performance at Barcelona's Primavera Sound festival on 1 June, the band went on to play the Porto leg of the festival the following weekend, later followed by an intimate show at Leeds' Brudenell Social Club on 16 June. The band stated on their Instagram account after the Brudenell gig: "I'll never forget last night. A room full of beautiful people. @nath_brudenell is part of our history and will be part of us as we try to move forward. There's no love too small x."

The Twilight Sad were reunited with Smith for their British Summer Time show in London's Hyde Park on 7 July and have just released brand new single, I/m Not Here [Missing Face] via Rock Action – listen in the YouTube player below or click here if it's not displaying correctly. In an interview with NME this week, frontman James Graham said of this new single: "The first song that we’re going to come back with epitomises the record. It’s got really noisy guitars but it’s pretty melodic. I think it’s the next stage of who we’re meant to be. We weren’t nit-picking, it just came naturally. It feels more like a band.”

And in terms of a new album, in the same interview guitarist Andy MacFarlane told NME: "It's finished, it’s done. It’ll be out next January. It all came together really well. To me, it’s like a different band almost. I did a stupid thing of writing loads of music, then giving it to James to write stuff over, then I deleted all the music. So then I wrote another album under it."

I/m Not Here [Missing Face] is the sound of a more confident Twilight Sad and through the course of writing this short news story, we've listened to it at least five times – the production is the best we've heard them sound and we can't wait to hear what the album has in store for January. As well as this new single, The Twilight Sad have just announced an American and European tour for October and November including two dates in the UK – they'll play Bush Hall, London, 27 Nov and The Liquid Room, Edinburgh, 29 Nov
