The dates and location for this year’s Scottish Alternative Music Awards have been revealed today. The ninth edition of the SAMAs will take place on Thursday 25 October at Saint Luke’s in Glasgow.

Founded in 2010, the SAMAs aim to recognise the best new talent on the Scottish scene, handing out awards in seven categories: Best Rock, Best Live Act, Best Newcomer, Best Hip Hop, Best Electronic, Best Acoustic, and Best Metal. Each award has four nominees, and is identified from 21 music industry judges, with the winners then chosen by the public.

The ceremony is still three months away, but the first act performing live on the night has been announced: Edinburgh based electronica artist Benjamin John Power aka Blanck Mass. You can pick up tickets for the event now over at Eventbrite, with the fee (£10 / £20) going towards raising money for Help Musicians Scotland’s mental health charity Music Minds Matter.

“After hosting the SAMAs Paisley Takeover and showcases at Xpo North earlier this year, I’m very excited for the 2018 awards process to begin!” says SAMA founder Richy Muirhead. “The ceremony will be a giant celebration with the 7 awards, performances, and bringing together the music industry and music fans. Scotland has always punched well above its weight, and it’s important we take a moment to celebrate this culture!”

Over the past eight editions, winners have included Colonel Mustard & The Dijon 5, Gerry Cinnamon, Be Charlotte and The Ninth Wave to name a few. The nominations and the public vote for this year’s winners will take place in September.
