Wax fans rejoice! Record Store Day, the annual celebration of vinyl, rolls around once again on 13 April, with hundreds of new pressings planned, including loads of special editions and rereleases of records that have long been out of print or never been available in the format.

Among the brand new releases is The Flaming Lips' King's Mouth, a 180g gold vinyl pressing which contains 12 new original Flaming Lips compositions as well as album narration by The Clash’s Mick Jones. There’s also a new Courtney Barnett 12”, Everybody Here Hates You, with Small Talk as the B-Side and hand-illustrated sleeve artwork by Barnett herself. Sigur Rós also releases a brand new soundtrack for dance work by leading Taiwanese choreographer Tsung-lung, which is being premiered in Taipei to coincide with Record Store Day.

Recorded on their five-date tour of England last year, Aidan Moffat and RM Hubbert release live album What the Night Bestows US, which also features violinist and vocalist Jenny Reeve (Strike the Colours), and includes completely reworked versions of Party On and Wolves of the Wood. Speaking of the latter track, Moffat said: "As we walked on stage, we decided to ask the audience in Oxford to join us for the new version of Wolves and howl as best they could all through the song – they were brilliant and it turned out lovely, and it's probably my favourite track of ours we' ve ever released."

Another eye-catching release is an Iggy Pop 7” containing The Villagers and Pain & Suffering, with the latter appearing on vinyl for the first time ever. "In my life, music has been a balm for loneliness," said the punk legend. "It was in the cheap ass little record store that I found a way to connect with other people. I was 18. It was a theatre, a glimpse at the world of commerce, and a cultural library; and my experiences as a teenage clerk were full of humour, and curiously warm. The modern approach, which is fine, still needs nourishment from this template. Everywhere on earth I go, there are freaks minding a record store. It's a good hang – daylight vs. dimly lit, clear eyed vs. stoned, and social vs. savage. So that's why I like 'em."

The other highlights are too numerous to mention, but we’ll give it a go. There's a new vinyl edition of Robyn’s masterful Body Talk which features the forever banger Dancing On My Own; a new pressing of David Bowie’s great cover album Pin Ups; Anderson .Paak's single Bubblin' is released on vinyl for the very first time; and there's a new 7’’ boxset of the singles Aretha Franklin released on Atlantic, including Respect, I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You and Baby I Love You.

You’ll also find the original New York test pressing of Bob Dylan’s Blood on the Tracks among this year’s RSD releases. Honeyblood double A-side The Third Degree / She's a Nightmare is there too; the two tracks are lead singles from upcoming third album In Plain Sight due for release on 24 May via Marathon Artists. IDLESMEAT EP and META EP are both being released on vinyl for the first time; The Mighty Boosh’s complete radio series gets a loving gatefold vinyl release with original artwork from Noel Fielding and liner notes from Julian Barratt; Madonna’s sparkling single La Isla Bonita gets a reissue, on green vinyl; Weezer release their new self-titled covers album, Weezer (The Teal Album) on, you guessed it, teal coloured vinyl; and you can get your hands on Janis Joplin Live at Woodstock August 17, 1969.

More record shops are taking part in this year's Record Store Day than ever before, with 250 signed up for the 2019 edition. As ever, hundreds of shops will host performances and DJ sets on the day, a list of which will be released in the RSD website in the coming weeks.
