Music Language bows out of 2014's festival calendar

The Music Language Festival, Glasgow's experimental, multi-venue festival dedicated to emerging and experimental artists, will not run in 2014. The organisers have announced, via promoter Cry Parrot's Facebook page, that the event will not be able to run this year. The statement reads:

"It is with sadness we can inform you there will be no Music Language Festival this year. After incurring a significant financial loss at last year's festival we concluded that it was no longer sustainable without public funding. This was our 2nd time seeking public funds for the festival, but despite investing a lot of research and time trying to 'get it right', we discovered today our attempts have [been] unsuccessful again. We had an exciting new programme, new venues and new ideas lined up, so it goes without saying we're completely gutted. A big thanks to everyone who has played at and supported the festival over the last 3 years, especially to Emily Roff (the past co-curator). The enthusiasm for the festival always has been amazing."

Last year's Music Language Festival featured performances from a huge range of Scottish bands, including Bill Wells, ANAKANAK, Hector Bizerk's LouieWounded Knee, Ela Orleans, Ubre Blanca, Lovers' Rights, Konx-Om-Pax and Golden Teacher. Providing an experimentation-driven alternative to the indie-rock dominated mainstream of Glasgow's other in-the-city festivals, Music Language was set up by Cry Parrot's Fielding Hope, who is promoting two gigs in London later in January at Cafe OTO, featuring Muscletusk, Whilst, Ela Orleans, Tut Vu Vu, Andrew Paine and The Final Five. Last year, in recognition of his efforts as a promoter prepared to take creative risks, Hope was named one of the Canongate Future 40, a list of Scotland's most important emerging creatives.
