Ummagma – Lama (Robin Guthrie Mix): Video Premiere

Watch the video for Cocteau Twins co-founder Robin Guthrie's mix of Lama by dream-pop duo Ummagma

Ummagma are Shauna McLarnon and Alexander Kretov, who met after a chance encounter in the suburban sprawl of Moscow, where they were each pursuing different musical paths. Bonding over their shared influences and weaving in their diverse backgrounds, this affair with love and sound soon developed into a marriage and the musical union known as Ummagma.

Ummagma are set to release their new four-track LCD EP on 22 Sep, preceded by lead single Lama, remixed by Cocteau Twins mastermind and producer Robin Guthrie, who the pair were introduced to by mutual friends. Guthrie was so taken with Lama that he decided to not only rearrange it, but added his own shimmering guitar parts to create the remix.

Guthrie’s remix is a perfect slice of laid-back dream-pop, and McLarnon’s vocals seem to float over its woozy instrumentation. The Skinny are delighted to be premiering the video for Guthrie’s mix of Lama, which you can watch in the player above – Lama originally featured on the band’s debut album Antigravity. The video for the Robin Guthrie Mix was directed by award-winning Brazilian videographer Dimitry Uziel and was produced by Coisas Que Pairam.

Of the song, McLarnon tells us: “We think it's important for things to come full circle. There is often closure in knowing that something can be finalised in the same place where it began. Like a journey back to oneself, to one's beginning, so to speak. That is how I feel about this remix.

"Cocteau Twins were certainly the band who most inspired our music and it is heart-warming to have Robin Guthrie involved in this. It also feels so right that the new video for this track should premiere at The Skinny given that Robin is from Scotland."

Ummagma release LCD on 22 Sep both digitally and on cassette via Label Obscura, and on CD via Somewherecold Records. The EP, featuring the Robin Guthrie Mix of Lama, is available for pre-order via Ummagma’s Bandcamp.
