Experimental pop five-piece Mesadorm have revealed a video for their new single Yours and Not Yours, which we are thrilled to be premiering. Watch it in the player above or on YouTube.
Formed in 2015 by five long-term friends – Blythe Pepino, Aaron Zahl, Daisy Palmer, David Johnston and Jo Silverston – each of whom have played, written and/or recorded with artists such as Goldfrapp, Paloma Faith and Frank Turner. Their debut album Heterogaster is due out on 11 May and Yours and Not Yours is the latest single to be released from it, following on from previous single Tell Me.
Yours and Not Yours is a dark and, at times, disturbing ride, with vocalist Blythe Pepino's stirring vocal delivery layered over sparse synths and heavy drums, as the track builds and slows before concluding in a dubstep-esque beat. The video explores the theme of realism, with regards to sex dolls/robots, as actor Nich Galzin takes on the role of a doll.
“The video for Yours and Not Yours is my second collaboration with Director Tom Jacob," Pepino tells us. "It plays on the theme in the song of loving to hate and hating to love something significant in your life. We use 'a woman living with a sex doll' as an analogy and all that fascinated us within that current hot topic. Consent and sex means a lot to me and Tom – we talk about it all the time – so we ended up most excited about making this kitchen sink style thriller, dwelling on how consumerism affects our relationships, our sexuality, our sense of home, safety and desire”
Heterogaster is released on 11 May via Babyleg Records
