Matt Calvert – 12051 (Video Premiere)
Watch the new video for Matt Calvert of Three Trapped Tiger's dreamy new single, 12051
Matt Calvert is perhaps best known as one of the composers and members of instrumental experimental trio Three Trapped Tigers where he plays guitar, synths and electronics. You may also know him as a regular collaborator with the Heritage Orchestra having performed with and worked on arrangements for drum'n'bass pioneer Goldie’s live band. If all of this means nothing to you then don’t sweat it as Calvert has just announced his debut solo record Typewritten, under his own name, set for release on 7 September via brand new independent label Truant.
Coming from the same world as Bonobo, the first single to be taken from Typewritten is the dreamy and luscious percussive track 12051 which was released at the end of June. Composed of soaring strings, drums, sax, piano, guitar, xylophone and more, 12051 is an utter delight from start to finish and has us excited for the full album later in the year. The Skinny are delighted to be premiering the music video for 12051, directed by Josh Renaut, which you can watch in the above YouTube player or by clicking here if it’s not displaying properly.
"12051 is named after my postcode in Berlin where I lived whilst crafting the Typewritten album,” Calvert tells us. “My Berlin tenure was a really positive experience, but this track undeniably has an inward, melancholic feeling – the loneliness of being in a new place, the longing for comfort. Visually it portrays an element of that feeling of being alone, even in a group of people or a huge city.
“Though the album is entirely acoustic, 12051 especially is influenced by electronic music. I wanted to create a record that subverted what ‘acoustic’ brings to mind, be it jazz, classical, folk, etc. This also explains the austere shoot location – I didn’t want to shoot in a space typically associated with acoustic sound, like a warm living room or concert hall environment.”
