Formed in the summer of 2011, Edinburgh four-piece indie-power pop band Little Love and the Friendly Vibes are ready to kick autumn well and truly into gear with their bags-of-fun new single, Italian Leather Jacket. Exploring the theme of how a simple item of clothing can radically transform a person, the single’s accompanying music video follows frontman Euan Weddell’s life-changing Leith charity shop purchase of an Italian leather jacket elevating his confidence levels and gaining him a gang of adoring followers along the way.
“Our bassist, Steve [Little] called me up after purchasing a rather dapper leather jacket from a charity shop in Tollcross,” Weddell tells us. “He joked that it was so cool we should write a song about it. I said, ‘Fancy coming over for a wee jam?’ then the song was born. We bounced lyrics back and forth to tell the message of how awesome it feels to have some dishy new threads. We were both in hysterics.
“Nora [Winstanley] wrote the Italian part on Google Translate ‘cause none of us can speak Italian. The rather lovely Bobby Heatlie at Colorsound recorded the track for us on the coldest day of 2018 – during the Beast From the East – and by the time we shot the video it was one of the hottest days of the year. It was great to have lots of friends involved in the video; Harper, the breakdancer, came all the way from Dundee with his mum and was a tad miffed at not being allowed to party with the rest of us at Café Habana – because he was only 11!
“While we were filming lots of unexpected things happened.” Weddell continues, “Our first scene was looking in a charity shop window in Leith but when we got there the window was broken and gone. We had to move on to shoot other scenes first while the glaziers fixed it. Overall, the experience was a lot of fun but it certainly drew me out of my comfort zone as I never expected to be throwing shapes in flares up Leith Walk. But so many people joined in the fun that I could just let go. Look out for the guy on the roof dancing!”
