Viagra Boys @ Barrowlands, Glasgow, 21 Jan

It’s shrimps to the front as Swedish punk rock explosion Viagra Boys arrive in their short shorts on the famous Barras stage

Unfortunately, an early set from eccentric Londoners Fat Dog is interrupted by technical difficulties, which is a shame because their curious fusion of punk-rock attitude and banging Eurodance seems like a solid bet to get people moving. If you like the headliners' sense of humour you’d probably find them amusing, but sadly they don’t really get the chance to show what they're all about.

By the time Viagra Boys take to the stage, any technical gremlins have been banished. With all six members dressed in some variation of the band’s uniform of cowboy hats, wraparound shades, sports jackets and extremely short shorts, they lunge straight into Ain’t No Thief from last year’s excellent Cave World album.

Within two songs singer Sebastian Murphy is stripped to his ample waist, as his bandmates rip up a frenzy behind him. In a splenetic, energetic and entertaining set, the sextet lean heavily on Cave World, including a rapturously received version of Troglodyte and the wickedly funny The Cognitive Trade-Off Hypothesis.

In the midst of the chaos Murphy pauses to acknowledge a wind-up shrimp which has been thrown on stage – a reference to Shrimp Shack, a track about huffing formaldehyde and making out with the listener’s mother – before ploughing on with the set.

As the band lock into the daffily danceable Sports and a closing sprint through the aforementioned Shrimp Shack, it’s clear that both they and the audience are having a ball. The shows ends with the band perched on the speaker stacks on either side of the stage duelling on sax and keytar for the barmy Return To Monke and the wonderful Worms – sample lyric: 'Worm took a bite of me and then he washed it down with a bite of you / The same worms that eat me will someday eat you too'. There’s no way not to have a good time.
