Uncle John & Whitelock @ The Swamp Bar

Doesn't the devil have any decent contacts in the music industry anymore? Cos Uncle John needs a bigger pulpit.

Surpassing even Uncle Jack Daniels in my affections, Uncle John and Whitelock are my favourite kin. Of course, I'm not related to them in truth, but the devil is in us all and maybe that counts.

After tonight's impressively heavy opening act Deadenstereo, they take to the stage. They should be playing bigger venues by now but the noirish Swamp Bar is admittedly perfect for their menacing blues tirade, like a preacher denouncing the sins of the flesh from his pulpit whilst gulping down black-market booze straight from the bottle and getting a blowjob from his sister.

Their front man, who is Uncle John if anybody is, throws himself off the stage backwards and lands on the floor, skidding into the first row of the crowd. He kicks over the mic stand even though he knows he needs it for his next line. He roars, he snarls, and the band bash out some songs from their criminally undersold album 'There is Nothing Else' and a couple of equally great newies.

Let's hope they don't go the way of tonight's headliners the Primevals who were their counterparts in the 80s, but having never got the attention they deserved at the time now seem stale in comparison to their younger brethren. Doesn't the devil have any decent contacts in the music industry anymore? 'Cos Uncle John needs a bigger pulpit. [Milo McLaughlin]
