The Veils, having progressed to full on rock, tear their songs to shreds

Back with a new line-up (complete with ridiculous writhing from the female bassist, who has evidently been told to think sexy) and fine new album Nux Vomica, The Veils have 'new and improved' stamped through them like a stick of rock: indeed, from the moment Finn Andrews unleashes his startling wounded howl, it's obvious we're dealing with a new band, who, having progressed from indie mumbles to full on rock, aren't shy about tearing songs to shreds.

Very little is played from their debut album tonight (although a disturbingly intense 'More Heat Than Light' pisses all over the album version), but it's a minor quibble: the new material is stunning, with 'Molly' and the pounding 'Jesus For The Jugular' providing jaw-dropping moments. From nowhere, The Veils seem to have become real contenders, and if they keep playing mesmerizing shows like this, there's no telling what they're capable of. [Heather Crumley]
