The Ronelles @ Barrowland 2

The Ronelles are a band that seem to have skipped the nineties, the eighties and maybe even the Seventies

Just as the Gallaghers caused a thousand buskers and tough-bloke drinkers to belt out Wonderwall ad nauseam, the Libertines' retro punk-pop has inspired a million bands to tilt their trilby rakishly back on their head, blame their bad performances on being wilfully 'shambolic,' and rattle out a load of uninspired retro pish. The Ronelles are a band that seem to have skipped the nineties, the eighties and maybe even the Seventies (with the exception of the work of Barât and Doherty), insisting on playing a hideously atavistic take on the old masters. They look lovely in their little leather jackets, with the nicest cheekbones outside of America, but their music is, to these ears, a little uninspired. That said, their performance is great: spirited, passionate and with a great rock 'n' roll exuberance. Their fans love them, and similarly backward looking hipsters the Fratellis have scored tons of airplay. Not bad then, just post-modern. [Rosie Capona]
