Effortlessly cool, The Internet dazzle at SWG3 in Glasgow

Live Review by Kenza Marland | 28 Mar 2019

The Internet take the stage this evening with the kind of confidence that only comes with being effortlessly cool. The crowd can barely contain their excitement, and the name of guitarist Steve Lacy (a man who’s drawn recent comparisons to Pharrell Williams) is chanted back at him with gusto.

Opening with Come Together, 2018’s Hive Mind opener, the show kicks off with the type of controlled funk that The Internet have honed to perfection. Followed immediately with the dance-inducing Roll (Burbank Funk), its oh-so-infectious bassline setting the room alight. The band are seamless, and their musicianship constantly apparent as they deliver hit after hit, showing off their alternative R'n'B sound in all its glory. From the mellow bedroom-appropriate Stay the Night to the more upbeat La Di Da, they demonstrate the strength of their melody writing.

There’s one evident star this evening, however, and that is frontwoman Sydney Bennett, professionally known as Syd. As the only female member of Odd Future and, prior to Frank Ocean coming out a few years ago, the only openly gay member of the LA collective, there's something remarkable about Syd. Her stage presence is simultaneously hypnotising and endearing. Dressed in white, she commands the band and the crowd, who are hooked on her silky smooth vocals, which complement The Internet’s blend of hip-hop, jazz, funk and R'n'B perfectly.

Cuts from their 2015 album Ego Death are as familiar and enjoyable as their more recent tracks. Just Sayin' / I Tried is especially strong, as Syd dedicates it to her ex-girlfriend, getting the crowd to shout the chorus back at her – 'You fucked up… / I don’t love you no more'.

Huge hit Girl, which features Kaytranada and is one of the group's most successful releases, is met with delight from the audience. Syd is ever-humble, confessing, “the first time we played here it was to like 12 people, tonight we’ve sold out… We appreciate every single one of you.” And the feeling's mutual as the group position themselves as leaders in their genre-melding sound with an outstanding live performance.
