The Hot Puppies @ King Tut's Wah Wah Hut

They're simply one of the best rock bands you're likely to see

Removing her high heels as she takes the stage and throwing them alongside her handbag, singer Becki Newman leads this tight band through a set taking in their recent album Under the Crooked Moon. With a bigger voice than a woman of her stature should be entitled to, Newman is an electric frontperson. The whole group are solid and overpowering, from Bert Wood's energetic drumming to songwriter Luke Wilson's incendiary guitar playing. A rip roaring version of the single 'Green Eyeliner' is the highlight of their all too short set. When they fail to return for an encore, they evoke the first rule of showbiz – always leave 'em wanting more. Without hyperbole, they're simply one of the best rock bands you're likely to see on the British live circuit. [Tom Brogan]
