The Go! Team @ Mansfield Traquair

Mind your balls! is the warning from the crowd.

Tonight's Smirnoff Electric Cabaret takes place within the finly crafted interior of the Mansfield Traquair, with the idea being to put on as many entertainments as a single venue and evening will allow. There are poi fire-spinners in the smoking area – "Mind your balls!" is the warning from the crowd – and Can Can dancers, buzz-saw girls and the like as warm-up acts on stage. But after all manner of slick but ultimately meaningless burlesque performances, there is nothing so refreshing as a driven and (whisper it) actually talented crew to step up and tear shit up. Tonight's headliners, the Go! Team, somehow fall shy of the euphoric candy-coated distortion-pomp glories they have been known to produce at venues and festivals far and wide, which have rightly earned them a first rate live reputation, though this is still an enjoyable set played with professional enthusiasm despite issues with the sound. Without such a fundamental hindrance, the new material played tonight could well match the near-classics from debut album Thunder Lightning Strike! [RJ Thomson]
