The Cinematics @ King Tut's

Let's just hope the Yanks don't try to plant the flag.

As the Americans did with the moon, so Glasgow has staked its claim on the highland four-piece, something the packed Tut's venue is testament to tonight. With their album Strange Education imminent, along with a forthcoming US tour, this may be the city's last visit for a while and if the current hype is anything to go by it could be the last time they grace a venue of this size on home soil. This evening's eager audience is treated to a selection of perfectly crafted pop songs. Much has been made of the diversity of the band's influences: everything from Jeff Buckley to the Smiths to the Cure. On the evidence presented here, parallels with the latter are easiest to spot. Upbeat melodies married to some seriously downbeat lyrics are delivered with both intensity and good humour. Let's just hope the Yanks don't try to plant the flag. [Tali Burgess]
