The introspective mood and straightforward delivery of tonight's show best appeals to The Black Angels' most die-hard fans

They take their time arriving on stage, but when they finally emerge, Austin psych rockers The Black Angels are greeted with a hero's welcome. Kicking off with Currency, the opening track from their latest release Death Songthey lay down a deep, ominous rumble that sets the tone for both the new record, and the introspective mood of tonight's show.

Death Song has been hailed as the band's return to form, so understandably the album is played just about in its entirety here. All the elements that make The Black Angels such an enduring sonic force – Alex Maas' eerie, effects-shrouded vocals, Christian Bland's reverb-soaked riffs, Stephanie Bailey's thunderous drumming – are present, though the group keep the fanfare to a minimum, letting the hallucinatory visuals courtesy of The Mustachio Light Show do the talking.

Dipping occasionally into their back catalogue (with the likes of Bad Vibrations from 2010's Phosphene Dreams) the band wrap up a lengthy set with the uplifting Life Song, before returning for an encore that picks out some highlights (Young Men Dead, Bloodhounds on my Trail) from their beloved debut Passover. The new material is undeniably some of their best to date, but the straightforward delivery of tonight's show best appeals to The Black Angels' most die-hard fans.
