Fan-picked bill proves too hard to top for legendary scottish rockers

Article by Ryan Drever | 05 Nov 2008

Tonight is the latest installment in the recent Tennent's Mutual campaign - where online members choose who plays - and sees a blinder of a line-up take a trip up north, to a slow-forming but eager Inverness crowd. Edinburgh's Rob St. John (***) and his troupe please the particularly punctual few with their polite but poignant stripped bare flutterings, bringing a certain warmth to this cold sunday night. This, at first seems an unlikely act to play a hall this big, even as openers - perhaps more suited to someone's front room or a melancholy barndance - but they perfectly pave the way for the undoubtedly fun and undoubtedly talented folk-pop overlord from Fife

Leave it to King Creosote (****) to kick things up a gear. The diminutive Kenny Anderson - ably assisted with a live band of fellow Fencers, proceeds to hop, jump, drink, laugh, crack jokes and most importantly, crank out some folk rock stormers. This proves just too hard to beat for tonight's headliners.

In terms of delivering a competent set of indie rock from yesteryear, Teenage Fanclub (***) have always given up the goods. But, although the now mostly greying boys from bellshill are looking fresh and still know how to kick out a tight melodic jam, it just seems a tad too sterile after the high jinx of KC. The set itself is a crowd pleaser though, from the relatively new (It's All in My Mind) to the well aged (Everything Flows), the Fannies pump out the 'hits', though tonight they could do with a shot of adrenaline.
