Tame Impala / Jagwar Ma @ Manchester Arena

Live Review by Peter Wild | 17 Feb 2016

Tame Impala hit Manchester the day after Mark Ronson shared videos for Summer Breaking and Daffodils, two songs he worked on with frontman Kevin Parker for Uptown Special last year. It’s as good a reminder as you need that Tame Impala have come a long way in since 2010’s Innerspeaker. Once upon a time they were new psychedelia; now, they’re rubbing shoulders with old Wrong Way Ronson.

But first, Jagwar Ma. The trio of fellow Aussies offer support and they roar out of the gate with Man I Need, Exercis and Uncertainty from 2013’s Howlin’, all of which serve to remind us why Noel Gallagher predicted big things for these guys. New songs Obi Wan and Ordinary don’t quite cut it in their current live guise, but Come Save Me and The Throw save the day. If what you want from a support is to set you up for the main attraction, Jagwar Ma just about smash it.

Tame Impala kick off with Let It Happen, the lead track from the aforementioned Currents and as close to a shot of hi NRG disco as you’re likely to get. Switching between albums (we get Mind Mischief and ‘Why Won’t They Talk to Me?’ from Lonerism and It Is Not Meant to Be from the Innerspeaker before switching back to the almost instantly forgettable The Momen from Currents), it all feels a bit schizophrenic.

The audience lap it up but there's also a sense that this is a band on their way to a destination they haven’t quite agreed on yet. Do they want to be the next Maroon 5? Or the 21st century’s own Active Listener? Cosmic crusaders or listless pop balladeers? At times tonight there's a foreboding sense of the latter.
