T on the Fringe: Paolo Nutini @ The Liquid Room

I cannot but somehow feel that he would better in his parent's chippy, free from all the trappings of fame and glamour. He's just too nice.

The one redeeming feature about Paolo Nutini is that he can certainly deliver what the audience wants, as shown by an enthusiastic sellout at the Liquid Room. Unfortunately for him, his bland stage presence, complemented by tedious songs, sadly made his performance rank alongside that of Rolf Harris in the interest stakes. Ok, so some people may find Rolf a real laugh, but you get the point. There is no doubt that the boy can sing, and there is some real heartfelt feeling behind his performance, but I cannot help but somehow feel that he would fair better in his parent's chippy, free from all the trappings of fame, sex, drugs and Kate Moss. Frankly, he is just too nice, and his performance shows exactly that. Nutini does not deliver anything to seperate himself from the current influx of male singer-songwriters: Blunt, Morrison et al. This lack of originality may ultimately prove to be his downfall. [Claire Mapletoft]
