Start to End hit the capital in the feels with their take on Jeff Buckley's Grace

  • Jeff Buckley – Grace

Summerhall is abuzz with conversation and general good vibes this evening as the Start to End collective get ready to grace us (badum tish) with their presence to perform one of modern music's most prized jewels, Jeff Buckley's Grace. Of course, this isn't the group's first foray into covering classic albums. The band, made up of members from several of Scotland's young and promising bands including Pronto Mama and Admiral Fallow, have also tackled greats from the likes of Carole King, Alanis Morisette, Pink Floyd, Daft Punk and John Martyn among others.

Grace itself is a musically complex piece of art, and one beloved by millions the world over, and certainly by everyone in attendance tonight. To mess with its formula and perform it even a little lacklustre would be a cardinal musical sin, but from the opening notes and 'Ooooos' of Mojo Pin, it’s clear these guys have this thing down. Vocalist Sam West nails Buckley’s haunting delivery throughout this evening's showing, from the soulful embrace of Lilac Wine to the falsetto heartbreak of Hallelujah. The entire band play Grace note for note, without one slip or fall from… grace. Okay, we'll stop now.

Wrapping up the only official album released by Buckley in his life time, the Start to End group treat the audience to rare B-sides Everybody Here Wants You and What Will You Say, from posthumous releases Sketches For My Sweetheart the Drunk and Mystery White Boy respectively. This little surprise encore acts a perfect way to end an inspiring and reflective evening, and an emotional journey through such a beloved record which not only sounded great, but was also visually compelling with impressive and educated lighting throughout.

Tragically dying so young, it’s difficult to really tell what would become of Jeff Buckley, whether he would have gone on to create masterpiece after masterpiece or faded into obscurity. What is certain is that in Grace he is immortalised as an icon, a poet, a sensitive soul taken too young. Start to End reminds everyone in attendance tonight of that young poet, the piece of perfection he gifted us and how special that album is and how lucky we are to have it in our lives and on our turntables.
