Soweto Gospel Choir (SkinnyFest)

Surely this is what the Festival's all about?

Whilst directing yourself through a maze of disorientated tourists, it's easy to forget the Edinburgh Festival epitomises unity. But when a performance is so engrossing it shivers every nerve with an enriching sense of humanity, you can almost forgive the forest of flyers that line the city's cobbled streets. And in the spine-tingling sound of the Soweto Gospel Choir, 'Auld Reekie' has found this year's sensorial saviour.

The twenty-six strong South African ensemble illuminate The Queen's Hall with a luscious vocal tapestry that joyously weaves its way into the heart of the audience. Fusing international gospel with the traditional beat of Africa's heartland, this mesmerising, symphonic, display energetically rises over any cultural barriers.

Bound by the infectious rhythm of tribal drums, the kaleidoscopic harmonies are seamlessly choreographed into a wave of passion. As each member strives for the sky, you realise this is more than a group expressing itself through song - it's a movement of sheer, unperturbed, pleasure. With every djembe beat and Zulu chant this rapturous collective is one step closer to achieving its nirvana. And the beauty is that your presence is obligatory.

Their quest for salvation purifies the Disney distaste of The Lion Sleeps Tonight, transforming it into an enchanting rhapsody drenched in hope. While the replenishing mastery of Oh Happy Days feels almost baptismal; alleviating every scar with ebullient soul. But it's the oceanic glory of Amazing Grace that truly dazzles. Sparkling with compassion it's remarkably orchestrated, probing every gaping emotion with pious sincerity.

As the last note of this wonderful evening fades, the venue stands together one last time for the night. Performers and audience are united by an appreciation for art and for life. Surely this is what the Edinburgh Festival's all about? (Billy Hamilton)
