Savage Mansion @ The Hug & Pint, Glasgow, 26 May
Savage Mansion is a Glasgow based rock band that contains well known faces from the city's prolific music scene. Taking to the stage on a sweaty Friday night, they unleash a collection of ear-conquering indie hits to a solid local crowd, in support of their new double A-side Do You Say Hello to Your Neighbours/Honeymoon (via Lost Map). With support from local punks Vital Idles, and the mesmerising Leeds based Mush, the bill showcases three bands that share a stylistic umbrella, while remaining eclectic.
The headliners open with two tracks from their debut EP Everyone to the Savage Mansion. First up is Elwood, a character driven pop song akin to a Black Francis creation. This is followed up by Bring Down the City Hall, which marks a definite shift in vocal delivery, favouring a style which traverses the song in a manner not dissimilar to Bob Dylan. These tracks set the precedent for the eleven songs that follow: memorable indie-rock with a diverse approach to vocal delivery. From the impossibly catchy new single Do You Say Hello to Your Neighbours, to the slow and talkative Nudist Beach, there is something for all rock fans in this band’s catalogue. The four-piece finish off with a flurry of yet to be released material, which reiterates this point. A one trick pony, they are not.
The band are clearly accomplished players and perform with a self-assuredness that is infectious. Taylor Stewart’s ability to drive the songs dynamically, from behind the kit, is of paramount importance in presenting a polished act; however, his efforts are not always picked up on by his band members, who could follow his lead more deliberately. His intelligent play is a breath of fresh air in a city rife with obnoxiously hard hitting drummers.
With a thirteen song set, Savage Mansion's performance might have felt overly long, but their presence endures and the audience seems more charmed with every track. This is a testament to Craig Angus's obvious talent for crafting an earworm, and choosing his band members wisely.
With an EP and a double A-side now to their name, Savage Mansion must have a number of releases ahead, with surely enough hooks to catch a prize debut album in the not too distant future.
