Radio 4 @ ABC2

Despite their Glasgow gig turning out to be an intimate affair, the sounds on offer were no less engaging

Tonight, NYC five-piece Radio 4 closed their first UK tour - since the release of last summer's Enemies Like These - at ABC 2. Best known for second album, the DFA-produced Gotham! which saw post-punk influences collide with dancefloor friendly percussion, its 'Dance To The Underground' single enjoyed particular success. Almost inevitably, follow-up Stealing Of A Nation failed to live up to its predecessor, largely falling foul to the group's over-ambition. Despite their Glasgow gig turning out to be an intimate affair, the sounds on offer were no less engaging; thick basslines met forceful drums, the pair combining with jagged guitar licks and percussion, keys and electronics added at regular intervals to offer extra musical seasoning. As the enthusiastic percussionist swapped places with the keyboard-cum-guitarist, energy levels remained high - more recent material such as the melodica-driven, 'Ascension Street' offering evidence that the Radio 4 sound continues to broaden beyond its original punk roots.
