Puma Blue @ The Poetry Club, Glasgow, 18 Oct

Despite complaints of feeling unwell and a limited number of songs, Puma Blue gives a sultry yet tender performance tonight for a sold out Poetry Club

Hosted in the hipster underlayer of Glasgow's SWG3, The Poetry Club, no other venue could reflect the mood of tonight's music better than the smoke-filled and crowded space that replicates a speakeasy or jazz club.

Support act Sunken are a blend of 90s R'n'B, jazz and trip-hop akin to the likes of Portishead. Much like tonight's headliner Puma Blue, and other upcoming acts like Babeheaven, they're part of a new wave of alternative jazz ideal for listening to at home, alone in your bedroom. Poppy Billingham’s mellow vocal is pleasing to the ear, modulating before settling in a classical and unpredictable jazz style.

Before too long, the mesmerising and breathless Puma Blue, real name Jacob Allen, bewitches the audience into a heady trance, holding them captive as he opens his set with first single, Want Me. Performing tonight with a full band, including drums and sax, Allen's exceptionally beautiful voice is the star here; sultry yet tender. Reminiscent of jazz greats such as Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday, his lyrics trip off the tongue on tracks like (She’s) Just a Phase, where the bass drops like lead and the audience nod along to every note. It's interesting to see how well Puma Blue translates from the bedroom to the live stage.

Four days into the tour, Allen seems a bit disoriented as he complains of feeling unwell and before long the set is over, likely due to the limited number of songs in the Puma Blue back catalogue (with little more than one EP's worth of material released so far) coupled with how nauseous he feels. Allen teases the release of a second EP as he performs some new and previously unheard songs and it's clear from the sold out crowd’s response that Puma Blue would be welcomed back to Glasgow to perform in a heartbeat.
