Patti Smith @ ABC

Experienced? This is bona fide rock 'n' roll history 101 by one of the originators.

"Have you ever been experienced?" Patti Smith enquires of the unconditionally mesmerised all-ages school night crowd assembled in front of her. Applying that familiar yowl and husk to her own repertoire as well as that of comrades old and contemporary, it's a testament to her legacy that, at 60, Smith's wisdom resonates throughout the ABC as surely as those stray bullets of saliva must be felt by the first few rows. Constantly flaunting her poetically erudite style, the proto-punk rocker fluidly weaves a spoken word Glasgow-specific narrative around her 90 minute set. This Alice in Wonderland-styled freestyle snowballs from a simple trip to the Mitchell Library into an anti-authoritarian sermon over the distance travelled between Jefferson Airplane's White Rabbit and a breathtaking encore of Neil Young's Helpless via a trundling yet powerful rendition of Smells Like Teen Spirit. Experienced? This is bona fide rock 'n' roll history 101 by one of the progenitors. [Dave Kerr]
