Oneohtrix Point Never @ The CCA, Glasgow, 1 October
The music of Brooklyn-based producer Oneohtrix Point Never is a tricky beast from which to attempt to wrest meaning. The intersection of live visuals with his music is important – the elaborate constructions of visual artist Nate Boyce present objects out of context; or warped, melted and mutated into almost urecognisable but powerfully evocative shapes. Tracks like Zebra and Boring Angel are presented as discrete, separate suites – in direct opposition to the approach of most 'ambient' musicians, usually intent on creating a seamless flow. As such, Lopatin's live show feels like a performance, as opposed to an arty, leftfield take on the soundscape or club mix.
Ultimately, Oneohtrix Point Never's power comes from his deep understanding of and passion for melody – droning passages are used as contrast to bright, polished artificial brass, or polished rave synths that wouldn't sound out of place on a Rihanna track or in a trance anthem, but presented almost beatless, their structures tweaked to evoke the abstract mechanics of Steve Reich. As a counterpoint to the pervading gloom and darkness of The Haxan Cloak and other peers, the music of R Plus Seven is bold, imaginative, and playful – when a fire alarm almost puts paid to the event, we stand for a good few seconds, wondering if the siren is part of the show.
