Neon Waltz @ Saint Luke's, Glasgow, 29 Mar

Neon Waltz are tighter than ever, bringing their UK tour to a close with a stellar set at Glasgow's Saint Luke's

Walking into Saint Luke's, it’s hard not to be struck by how stunning this converted church is. The stage, set between two huge stained glass windows, is dominated by organ pipes. With the unique stage perfectly set, Neon Waltz start, much to the delight of a growing crowd.

Having recently slimmed down to a four-piece, touring musicians help beef up their live sound tonight, and they waste no time getting started with Bare Wood Aisles from their 2017 debut Strange Hymns, which is greeted like an old friend by the weekend crowd. Singer Jordan Shearer, flanked by guitarist brothers Jamie and Kevin Swanson, conducts the crowd as they sing along. Latest singles Friends Who Lost Control and The Stranger Things fit perfectly into the set and hint at a different but still recognisably Neon Waltz sound. Acoustic favourite I Fall Asleep is performed plugged in tonight, helping to fill the larger space.

It being the last night of a fairly lengthy tour through Scotland and England, the mood is upbeat and the band play with a relaxed confidence. The best reception is saved for mid-set banger Dreamers, where the crowd join in, singing along with boundless enthusiasm – this is just one of many moments where the connection felt between band and fans is powerful.

Neon Waltz are tighter than ever, seeming to improve with every tour, and rather than bursting on to the scene they've taken time to hone their craft, building it up piece by piece, and there's now a palpable sense it's about to pay off.
