Nelly Furtado @ Clyde Auditorium

Furtado remains more cheesy pop than hip-hop

Anyone expecting the sexed-up atmosphere of a hot and sweaty club, with big basslines and everyone getting down to Maneater, might feel a little cheated by Nelly's Get Loose World tour. Despite some crossover chart hits, Furtado remains more cheesy pop than hip-hop. Managing to mangle I'm Like a Bird with a backing beat and some low rent rapping before dropping the faux pas of asking about the last World Cup - "Scotland were there right?" - following Euro 2004 song Forca, the set reaches real low points.

However, a cover of Gnarls Barkley's Crazy proves a highlight, allowing Furtado to display her amazing vocal talent. Sadly, the Brit award doesn't quite equate to the credibility it aspires to and the backing dancers may as well be extras in a high school musical. The hits go down well, but as a live show it's hard to shake the feeling that Furtado's music is best enjoyed as throwaway pop, plain and simple. [Julie Paterson]
