My Morning Jacket @ ABC 2

The group's versatility is put keenly on display

Louisville, Kentucky's My Morning Jacket seemed to break the alt-country mould with their last album, the critically acclaimed 'Z'. Jim James, the hirsute quintet's main player and front-man took the sturdy yet mournful country-rock sound forged by Neil Young and merged it with a range of disparate musical influences to create an enthralling patchwork of sound; his own mournful, reverb-laden vocal easily its strongest and most engaging element.

In front of a packed and receptive ABC 2 crowd they showcase the bulk of 'Z' with work from their impressive three-album back catalogue given a healthy outing too. From keyboard-led melancholy through bouncy, hook-filled reggae; wild guitar rock-outs to more country-tinged standards, the group's versatility is put keenly on display. A near half-hour encore provides the perfect opportunity for them to exhibit their impressive repertoire to the full - the whole gig a great advertisement for their forthcoming live album.
