In most artistic circles, performing back to the audience would be a definite no-no, but for aptly named Glasgow drone artist Meursault it was all part of the performance, as he created mysterious walls of melancholy noise from layers of looped and bowed guitar, infused with the same aching, slow-moving sadness that makes William Basinksi so wonderful.

Fresh from touring America with Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, this was a homecoming gig for drummer extraordinaire Alex Neilson, performing with David Keenan on saxophone as the free jazz Tight Meat Duo. Their energy and enthusiasm was a real delight; their short but glorious set overflowing with joyous free expression.

MV & EE conjure images of evenings on weird American communes, bashing out drug-infused, analogue valve-driven jams. Overcoming initial amp problems, they brought together forward-looking psych, free folk, vintage blues, country and rock. For the ecstatic conclusion, they were joined by Alex Neilson, again revelling in his return to freedom, driving forward a huge blast of shuddering rock. During this catharsis, a wonderfully Glaswegian shout came from the shadowy recesses; 'awww man, this is pure head music!' They were right. [Alex Woodward]
