A lesson in ripping the arse out of it.
| 13 Sep 2006
Opening tonight for two bands hauling their nationwide tour down Niddry Street, were Gas Giant. With a wall of tension in their sound and each noise methodically extracted from oodles of guitars, there were certainly positives to be derived. A lack of vocal input may be their Achilles' heel. Even the most minimal of murmurs would potentially have added a dimension of loveliness to some of their more haunting moments.
Cue Upcdowncleftcrightcabcandstart. Breathe. Billed as 'experimental rock', surely they could have rocked more experimentally, given the beats some more accomplished bands may have yielded from dual drum kits. With far too much emphasis placed on meandering intricacies, the outcome (or lack of it) was forced to take a backseat. One Sigur Ros-like peak threatened to save their performance from the realms of mediocrity, but incessant dwindling wastefully put paid to that.
Expecting an improvement from the previous, heavier sound of Upcdownc…, my hopes were dashed as the headliners, MT., proved to be the poorest on display. The boy/girl guitar duo hovered between boredom and bewilderment as they handed out a lesson in ripping the arse out of it. MT. ambled along as if they were performing to nobody, as was almost the case by the end of their set. The line between a poor band and performance is blurry. For their sake, let's hope they make it less ambiguous upon their return. [Finbarr Bermingham]
