Motorhead @ Carling Academy

It was clear to see why the most likely cause of death at a Motorhead show is a heart attack.

Even with a few tickets still available, the Carling is rammed. Perhaps it's the fact the the majority of patrons have waistlines, hair and a love of real metal twice as strong as any other crowd. And you can see why. When the warty wonder that is Lemmy takes to the stage he lets rip a growl of incomprehensible lyrics and unleashes a battering of thrash metal. The set comprises of old and soon-to-be Motorhead classics, with every song a little louder than the last. For well over twenty years Motorhead have claimed that they are loudest band in the word and by turning up the volume every three songs, they certainly proved it. When you thought it couldn't take any more, Mikkey Dee suddenly interrupts the proceedings with a delicious five minute drum solo. As a nice aside Lemmy introduces to the stage perhaps Scotland's biggest Motorhead fan, Robbie Coltrane, before continuing the incredible onslaught. Finally the moment came for the 'Ace of Spades' and the place exploded with energy. With a monstrous amount of over 40s taking to the floor, it was clear to see why the most likely cause of death at a Motorhead show is a heart attack. 'Overkill' finished things off nicely before the leather and sweat clad army made their way to the nearest pub. In less than two hours, Lemmy and company proved that rock and roll does indeed live forever. [Graeme Park]
