Miaoux Miaoux / Monogram @ Stereo, Glasgow, 27 May
When Miaoux Miaoux – aka producer Julian Corrie – launched his debut album Light of the North at Mono back in 2012 it was a relatively low-key affair, in front of an audience of no more than 100. Three years on there’s a far greater weight of expectation surrounding School of Velocity. Stereo is the venue of choice and the crowd has trebled, at least.
There’s also some meaty support acts. Monogram popped up in several ones-to-watch lists around Christmas thanks to continuing buzz around Romance, a song first uploaded the previous year. Liam Rutherford, formerly guitarist in The Darien Venture, is now pursuing a more post-electro, beat-driven path. While his recorded output is finely honed, on stage Monogram remain raw, having only played live for the first time last month, and are still finding their feet as a group.
Corrie has worked hard to give this album launch a sense of occasion, from the giant silver balloons decorating the stage to inviting the Cairn String Quartet to accompany his band. The latter provide an elegant sweep to Autopilot and particularly Better For Now, the 2012 single that already sounds like a classic.
This extended live band creates some minor technical difficulties – which must pain a professional producer like Corrie – but provide a fuller representation of Miaoux Miaoux’s carefully-layered studio work. The highlight of a 50-minute set is new single The Quick, a dancefloor monster that recalls LCD Soundsystem at their peak, and prompts whoops of delight from those assembled.
