Lush Purr @ Leith Depot, Edinburgh, 20 Oct
Despite the strange atmosphere at tonight's show, Lush Purr just get on with it and do their best to work with the dodgy hand they've been dealt
Mike Geist and band make the sort of dreamy, beach-hippy pop that has become overwhelmingly popular in recent years, yet it feels a little out of place on a dark October night in Leith. Still, it's warm and hazy in all the right places, and clean, cool and hypnotic in the others. It's likely nothing you haven't heard before, but the band work well together and show flashes of working a little more weirdness into the mix. A solid set to kick us off.
Next up, Jack Lee and co. keep the relaxed vibes flowing, with Lee's casual demeanour and wit recalling Pavement's Stephen Malkmus; perhaps a fairly clear touchstone for how the band sound too. Still, obvious influences aside, this Scottish/Aussie crossover crew deliver a set of charming, guitar-driven pop that is loose and laid-back enough to lure you in with ease, but upon closer inspection is also measured, confidently played and well-written.
Lush Purr, however, are unfortunately left with the scattered remains of a previously full house, for reasons that aren't entirely clear. Jack Lee and LP are about to go on tour together and run in pretty much the same circles, while the latter's partnership with popular local record factory Song, by Toad makes it all the more unusual that the place would half empty before we're done. Still, our Glasgow headliners are pretty much veterans at this point – with a combined CV that includes The Yawns, Copy Haho and Battery Face among others – and do their best to work with the dodgy hand they've been dealt and just get on with it.
As represented on debut album Cuckoo Waltz, Lush Purr's fuzzy bursts of melody sound like hazy daydreams secretly recorded in a cupboard under the stairs – which is great, and charming in its own way – but tonight these songs are free to open up a little more and breathe. The end result is closer to the warm-all-over fullness suggested by their name, and it really suits them. That being said, there's still something missing in the overall atmosphere of tonight's performance. Perhaps it's simply the lack of bodies up front sucking a bit of the energy – and maybe, confidence – out of the room, but it would be a good guess that they've had better nights. With any luck though, they'll have many more.
