King Creosote @ Old Fruitmarket, 28 Jul

Surprisingly more low-key than upbeat

King Creosote reigns supreme as a chief billing for Glasgow's Saturday line-up of UK-wide festival 'TrocaBrahma'. This touring four-date festival features an eclectic and electric fusion of Brazilian beats with British riffs, under the endorsement of Brazilian beer brand Brahma. Collaborations transcend both cultures and musical styles with a genre-spanning mix of diverse styles spawning hybrid forms of electronica, europop, folk and funk. Supporting act highlights include Gruff Rhys meets Tony da Gattora. The set features novel and improvised use of a range of 'the gatorra': a cross between a guitar, a synthesiser and a drum machine resulting in a mix of electronica and acoustica. King Creosote [a.k.a Kenny Anderson] makes his presence known with an opening song reprise of C-R-E-O-S-O-T-E (repeat-to-fade). His unmistakeably Scottish voice is set to the samba tones of his Brazilian counterpart, Romulo Froes, to measured success. It makes for an interesting blend of musical styles; inevitably some songs have smoother transitions than others. Though all in all a great concept, the resultant sound is pure mish-mash in places. In any case, the carnival atmosphere just isn't here tonight and sometimes that's what makes a gig. Close, but not quite yet a fully formed cigar. [Yasmin Ali]
