Johnny Cash Tribute Night - All Profits to Shelter (Various Artists)- Stereo, Feb 8

Article by Nick Q | 17 Mar 2006
On a typically shitty Glasgow night, nine bands from various disciplines got together to celebrate the life and works of the great man in black. Choosing a couple of songs each, rehashed in styles that ranged from kitsch electro to country rock, the bands spunked their own images all over the great songs. Crammed to the rafters, with a queue of disconsolate kids rejected at the door, Stereo dripped with sweat and outlaw ambience, with a thirsty mob of keyed-up punters baying for booze. A couple of the nine bands played their own tunes but mostly they surrendered to the macho majesty of the great man. With all profits to Shelter and a horde of drunken fans howling along to every song, I can only hope this is the first in a long line of tributes to dead superstars. Next week: Flying Matchstick Men do the hits of George Formby. [Nick Q]
