Goldfrapp @ O2 Academy, Glasgow, 31 Oct

Goldfrapp deliver a greatest hits package tonight which sadly offers little more than the experience of watching a TV performance from the comfort of your own home

With a performing and recording history spanning almost two decades, Goldfrapp's music has functioned as a soundtrack for multiple generations. The combination of Alison Goldfrapp's ethereal vocals and Will Gregory's layered synthesizer arrangements have yielded the duo multiple dance hits, and they deliver up a kind of greatest hits package tonight padded out with new material from their latest release, Silver Eye.

Slide In, from 2005's breakthrough album Supernature, is a highlight; sexy and sleazy in equal measure, and it's one of the most danceable moments. Goldfrapp's vocals are undeniably emotive, especially at the higher end of the spectrum where she recreates a kind of Kate Bush soprano. The main set ends with another Supernature highlight, Ooh La La, before a crowd pleasing two-song encore of Utopia and Strict Machine.

All of this is enough to keep the Goldfrapp die-hards happy, but elsewhere the performance falls flat on several levels. Our frontwoman's engagement with her audience is minimal, making it tough to connect with the material in an environment where the O2 Academy's enormous space already dissipates the intensity of the sound. With nearly 20 years' worth of material under their belt, delivering a set that clocks in at a mere 80 minutes is cheeky to say the least. Ultimately there's a sense of paint-by-numbers about this show; it offers little more than the experience of watching a TV performance from the comfort of your own home.
