Foals @ Barrowland, 5 Oct

Whilst watching Dananananaykroyd's (****) contagious brand of jitter-punk unfold onstage, a fellow concertgoer asks me what their name is. “I really like their enthusiasm,” she says. Maybe this is precisely why Foals picked them as support for their current UK tour. The sextet’s trademark double drum kit set-up enables a highly percussive sound that stutters as both singers stalk the stage like wolves circling prey. The band delivers a stirring performance of riotous ‘fight-pop’, setting a high standard for their anticipated debut LP as well as the night ahead.

Holy Fuck (***), a more electro-based proposition, only get demerits for engaging with themselves far more than the crowd. It’s surprising when, during LP’s ready for the floor Milkshake, the audience remains so still. It could just be that the Toronto quartet is incredibly interesting to watch: their instrumentation includes feeding film through a projector to manipulate the sound, and the Fuck's ethos entails replicating electro sounds through analog methodology.

Conversely, Foals (****) exhilarate from the start. They take the stage under a single purple light, bringing up a rousing percussive crescendo before launching their attack of brainier than thou dance-rock. The Oxford lads are so spastic that one might ask if there’s a doctor in the house, and when they dive into their rousing single, Cassius, the ballroom explodes into a frenzy of movement. “Last time we were in Glasgow,” bassist Walter Gervers says, “we played to about 25 people.” Tonight’s sell out gig is a far cry from that, as Foals convey seasoned professionalism to a packed house - though they still fester with raw energy - and leave the Barrowland swarm sweat-drenched but satisfied.
