First Aid Kit @ Usher Hall, Edinburgh, 26 Oct

The bond between band and fans can be a difficult one to navigate, but it's clearly an easy alliance between First Aid Kit and the adoring legions at Usher Hall tonight

There's a sense of restlessness as opening act The Staves take the stage. It seems like the majority of the sold out crowd have arrived early to see the hotly tipped sister trio. And they provide the perfect atmosphere: mixing dark introspection with ethereal candour on Tired as Fuck and Make It Holy, while paying tribute and covering The Waterboys' classic The Whole of the Moon.

First Aid Kit's set is less visually striking than the effervescent cinematics they treated us to in Glasgow in February, with more focus simply on the music. Irn-Bru makes a sweet, cursory appearance after newly minted fan-favourite It's a Shame, but there's less banter than usual as they work through a few older cuts like Master Pretender and The Lion's Roar.

You Are the Problem Here is a rare moment of caustic politics in a set that is generally dappled in personal laments or joyful exuberance, but its takedown of rape culture is sadly prescient. It's followed by recent song Ugly, which provides a perfect rejoinder in its sad tale of unfair social expectations, but ultimately ends in the celebratory tones of acceptance and self-love, leading neatly to rousing party starters like Hem of Her Dress and King of the World.

The encore is made up of the hard-hitting trio of Rebel Heart, Fireworks and My Silver Lining, prompting mass swaying, singing or simply huge smiles below eyes flickering with defiance as we're entreated to 'keep on keeping on.' The bond between band and fans can be a difficult one to navigate, but it's clearly an easy alliance between First Aid Kit and the adoring legions at Usher Hall.
