EVOL pinches one pin for most standout live-performance but since Goulage Beat put out the grooviest DJ set as well as the deadliest femme fatale ever seen on a stage, they clinch a worthy consolation point

Not getting enough bloodshed from your favourite indie night? Enter Fightclub, hosted by the fresh-faced Spies in the Wires, we get to see the Goliath of Edinburgh indie, EVOL take on the new wave/punk rebels of Goulag Beat, each corner with an upcoming act apiece to unleash. The atmosphere at Cab Vol is top notch as always by the time EVOL kick off with Little Doses (SSS). Fronted by a lovely lass with enough girl-next-door charm to keep you blushing for a week, the local four-piece release a wall of no-frills rock n' roll that exclaims COCK! and commands full attention immediately, with catchy seventies-styled guitar-licks. Half-way through the set the Doses choose to turn down the tempo which somewhat hampers the initially brilliant impression and keeps the rating down to a respectable three Skinnys.

It's time for Goulag to counterattack and they chose to do so with Leith-based Paper Cut Rock (SS). Armed with an I-Mac, a couple of MCs, a guitarist with a passion for old-school rock n' roll and possibly the most stunning backing vocalist ever witnessed by these eyes, Paper Cut Rock launch an attack landing somewhere between Happy Mondays and modern day Grindie. They make for an initially interesting proposition but the outcome falls flat with a slightly uninspiring range of beats and vocals. So, roundup time; EVOL pinches one for the standout live performance they endorse, but since Goulag Beat put out the grooviest DJ set, they clinch a worthy consolation point. 1-1! [Chris Nordeng]
