Field Music / Future Pilot AKA feat Found @ Bongo Club

Article by Garry Thomson | 10 Jun 2007

First up, Glasgow's maverick artist Future Pilot AKA presents somewhat of a problem. On record his sometimes brilliant compositions have been graced with parts from some of music's finest luminaries - from members of Sonic Youth to Belle and Sebastian; The Stooges to the Go-Betweens. What's apparent from the outset is that, while Found are more than competent at producing their own sounds live, when it comes to replicating the parts of others as a backing band, it seems completely disjointed. While Future Pilot AKA is happy to play as a single cog in the rhythmic wheel, it falls upon Found to take the forefront. What is occasionally highly enjoyable, leaves us with the nagging feeling that we're watching a covers band that would be a lot more settled playing their own songs. This does almost work, but almost just isn't quite good enough. With rumours abounding that Sunderland's Field Music are about to hang up their boots and go their respective solo ways, tonight's set has the air of something of a last celebration. Drawing on their back catalogue of indie pop-laced songs, tonight may turn out to have been one of the last chances to see these guys live. With their angular, psychadelic sound and harmonies straight from the West Coast, they mark themselves out from their contemporaries. House is Not a Home and the much requested Working to Work are highlights of a set that points to what could be. Even when their bass drum has to be tackled by the boys and their trusty hammer, it doesn't put a dampener on tonight's set. Here's hoping they don't call it a day just yet. [Garry Thomson]
