This was KC's night and he just wasn't having a good one

Do you think music at the Fringe is a bad idea? implores Kenny Anderson, aka King Creosote, towards the end of the Fence Collective's three night stand at the Smirnoff Underbelly. "No" was the reply from the fiercely loyal audience, but, in truth, this was an evening that was decidedly short of the freewheeling spirit that characterises the best Festival events. KC has been rightly praised in the past – what's not to like about a folkie maverick who tosses off lovelorn sea shanties for fun? But this was definitely an off night. Minus the nuances a full band brings, Anderson's songs sounded surprisingly uniform at times and many of his finer moments, Not One Bit Ashamed and 6,7,8 for example, were slowed to a funereal dirge. Anderson's fellow Fencers Pictish Trail and Gummy Bacco did their best to inject some life into proceedings, but this was KC's night and he just wasn't having a good one.
