DUDS @ Nice N Sleazy, Glasgow, 20 Jan
A night of saxophone, trumpets and fun with Banana Oil, Kaputt and Manchester outfit DUDS
2018, the year of the saxophone. Or the trumpet. If you're skilled with either of these instruments, you'll be in high demand this year. By the beginning of the nineties, the ubiquitous 80s sax solo was sadly on the verge of extinction, but these three bands are bringing back the flourish in a big way. First up, Banana Oil, who have Sleazy's basement at near capacity for their opening slot. Made up of players from the likes of Golden Teacher, Lylo and Gay Against You, this trio dish out banging instrumental jams topped off with some sweet tenor sax.
'New' band Kaputt are up next; recently formed and including members of Spinning Coin, Breakfast Muff and The Bellybuttons, the five-piece have already made their mark with the excellent single (and accompanying video) Feed My Son. The track is a highlight of their bouncy, endearingly erratic guitar pop freak outs – as is frontman Cal Donnely's deadpan acknowledgment of the headliners, stating "this is the highlight of my career" – before launching into a track of the same name.
Good luck if you can find a spot to watch DUDS; the hype around them is deservedly huge (last year's debut album Of a Nature Or Degree is a scorcher, and they hold the illustrious claim to being the first UK band to be signed to California label Castle Face Records). The sprawling outfit from Manchester cut a bold look onstage with matching safari-style ensembles and they've got a happy, heaving, dancing crowd on their hands. Much like their songs, the set is a cacophony of wild arrangements, jarring stops and starts, punk melodies and trumpet blasts. Basically, it all comes together to create a sound that's impossible to describe, but a hell of a lot of fun to witness live.
