Drive Carefully Records Night @ 13th Note Café

a rendition of the Red Dwarf theme should earn them five Skinnys by itself

Sodium Nightlife makes an unassuming entrance, dispensing with such frivolities as introductions and engagement with the audience. It's important to remember that his entire set has been created using software freely available online and his DIY ethos is applauded. The resulting tired beats are not. The next act have the decency to introduce themselves. Just as well really, given that they're called Saj Jonsfield. A softer affair with slightly spikier moments – like the Magic Numbers having a pillow fight with the Flaming Lips: they share Wayne Coyne's fondness for cute electronic noises. The headliners are unmistakeably local, littering their songs with references to Dominic Diamond, Paul Needles and digs at the Fratellis. Their set includes several of the latter's riffs and a rendition of the Red Dwarf theme which should earn them five Skinnys by itself. Unfortunately the remainder is lazy, charmless and not as funny as it thinks it is. [Tali Burgess]
