Cowboy Hunters @ The Old Hairdresser's, Glasgow, 18 Jul
Unphased by the heat, punters bounce around The Old Hairdresser's attic space while MOGAN, Dinosaur94 and Cowboy Hunters bring the chaotic tunes
Oh boy is it hot in the attic of The Old Hairdresser's tonight, but the punters aren't phased by the heat for a minute. Instead they own the night, bouncing around the mosh pit as MOGAN, Dinosaur94 and headliners Cowboy Hunters play their chaotic tunes.
Opening Weird & Wired's show tonight, MOGAN stomp around the unelevated stage in highlighter yellow dungarees as electronic beats shake the walls throughout their performance. The crowd reacts exactly how you might expect from those hot noises, with headbanging, swaying, and some, inspired by MOGAN’s foot stomping, slam the ground themselves. Hailing from Manchester, the solo artist’s electronica is a treat to have come up north.
Tonight isn't just a moment to bask in the joy Scotland’s underground music scene exudes, it's also a time for the community to raise money for a good cause. Between sets goodies are being raffled off in support of the Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign’s Fighting Fund, which helps pay for Palestine activists' legal fees. Punks and punters alike are keen to open their pockets and stand in solidarity with comrades fighting for Palestinian liberation.
Jules Che Thurlow, host of Weird & Wired, is up next, decked out in a cowboy hat and boots with two songs and an on-theme poem, The Midday Cowboy. Draped above the stage behind him is a banner with a cowboy on the back of a horse; it seems tonight's headliners have had some business to take care of before their set begins later.
Edinburgh surf-punks Dinosaur94 are back gigging after taking a wee hiatus and get everyone all hot, sweaty, and dancing during their mid-show set. Stand-out performances are their 2020 single Love Impaired and a change on lead vocals, with Lizzie taking the reins for an absolute killer cover of Le Tigre’s Deceptacon.
With a fresh pint in hand and the raffle having just finished up, Cowboy Hunters take the stage fresh from finishing their real job: cleaning up loose cowboys floating around The Old Hairdresser's. Ahead of releasing their cover of Princess Superstar's Perfected (Exceeder) this Thursday, the duo absolutely rip through their set to the delight of a rambunctious crowd. If you missed Cowboy Hunters on The Skinny’s Pyramid Stage at Kelburn Garden Party don’t fret, because the Macarena and Cha Cha Slide finishing out their set doesn’t seem to be a one-time thing.
