Chatting easily to the crowd from the stage in Mono’s bright, plant-filled venue space, evening sunlight still filtering through the skylight, Rachael and Paul Swinton could be performing to their friends and family in their living room. Instead the Glaswegian twins are launching Pink Silence, their immaculate third album as Cloth, released just a couple days prior to critical acclaim, to a sizable and eager audience.

Their relaxed familiarity seems almost oblivious to the crisp, measured precision of the music itself. Pinpricks of electric guitar dot out the introduction to the album's opener and title track. Closely recreating the sounds on the record, Paul’s guitar is bright and staccato, yet just gritty enough to add bite, while Rachael fills out the negative space with heavier, thicker guitar. There’s no drummer with them tonight so the beats are provided by a programmed drum machine which Paul has to whack with a drum stick at the start of each song to get it going. Rachael’s vocals are featherweight, breathed out into the space like a mist, completing a pristine, carefully-controlled palette of sound that lends itself to this intimate setting.

In their 30-minute set, the duo perform the other three singles from Pink Silence. The hazy, melodic Golden is followed by the low, gritty riff of Polaroid. Rachael admits this song might be her favourite from the album and with its up-tempo grooves, switching nimbly from one hook to another, it’s a crowd-pleaser tonight as well.

After the laid-back Stuck, the band revisit some of their earlier material with the cool minimalism of 2019’s Felt and finally the atmospheric alt-rock of Demo Love, their first ever single from 2018. Paul films the enthusiastic applause from the crowd on his phone before they head over to the merch stand to chat to their fans. There will be a chance to hear Cloth play to a much bigger audience when they support Mogwai at Barrowlands on 17 May, but to hear these songs rendered so lovingly and meticulously in a low-key, intimate space is truly something special.
