!!! (Chk Chk Chk) @ Stereo, Glasgow, 31 Oct

There's huge fun to be had at tonight's !!! show which is the holy trinity of sexy, sweaty and sincere

Live Review by Juliette Jones | 01 Nov 2017

Stop the press: Beck and Wayne Coyne from The Flaming Lips have cross-bred themselves in an experiment and produced an energetic frontman who has somehow ended up at Stereo tonight. No, wait, it's Nic Offer and his New York-based dance-punk lot !!! (Chk Chk Chk), the band that rose alongside but never totally blended in with the likes of fellow indie dance intriguesters LCD Soundsystem and The Rapture in the 2000s.

Some people have been fairly snotty about !!!, many of whose songs wear their 70s and 80s funk and disco influences on their sleeve, causing alarms to go off when being run through the indie purity machine. There's huge fun to be had, though, when !!! open up the live dimension. Tonight we see the addition of ace guest vocalist Lea Lea; an onstage Halloween fancy dress competition; unexpected song mash-ups; and, notably, Offer looking chic chic chic in shorts and a suit jacket, showing off moves that are the indie-dance holy trinity of sexy, sweaty and sincere.

The songs do stand on their own, though. If some of their earlier output occasionally drifted into Vic Reeves' club singer stylings, there's little of that tonight. There are older songs, and new bounce-abouts from latest album Shake the Shudder with vocals springing around on tightly coiled beats. There's a trace of Hot Chip in the sound, if not the show: a certain breed of indie-dance fan can only dream of the day Alexis Taylor soaks his shirt dancing, then takes it off, wrings it out into his mouth and gargles with the sweat.

After realising where the influences come from and the divine way they've ended up – Dancing is the Best Revenge is a don't-need-a-man, finally-figured-it-out improvement on Madonna's Rescue Me – it all makes sense, and we just dance. You might have to go all the way to the High Court of indie to get an official pardon for really liking !!!, but it would be worth it. Dance there, all the way. And then go and see them live when you get back.
